Christopher is a Senior Commercial Lawyer who has a diverse background in both in-house and private practice across multiple jurisdictions.
Can you describe your experience of working through Obelisk?
A great experience. Obelisk has provided a fantastic opportunity to continue being involved with first class work in a first class environment, whilst combining other life interests.
What makes your expertise unique?
I am fairly adaptable, I have a very diverse legal background, with both in-house and private practice experience gained in multiple jurisdictions across a range of industries and disciplines.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of flexible working as a lawyer?
The ability to continue learning and contributing to a business in a meaningful way, whilst combining and pursuing other personal interests.
What’s the most challenging?
Getting fully up to speed (quickly) on internal processes, preferences and tools without necessarily being on the ground can be complex and often requires fairly diligent effort – so knowing when and who to ask for help is important.
What are your proudest professional and personal achievements so far?
I would like to think that I have developed new relationships in a short space of time that will outlast the term of my contract. It obviously isn’t always possible, but the mere fact they would actually want me to stick around a little longer is both personally and professionally rewarding.
How do you find the right work/life balance?
It requires self discipline to draw the line – particularly if, like me, you enjoy your work and are part of a busy tight knit team. It also requires some flexibility on both sides, because work flow is rarely consistent over time and you have to be able to adapt to the needs of the moment.
What are your words of advice to other legal consultants?
Keep an open mind and don’t be afraid to step out of your immediate comfort zone if need be. A change is refreshing and you never know what doors a new skill set will open for you.
How do you start and end your day?
It is a tale of coffee and wine. I use the snooze button to try order my priorities before putting my feet on the floor and events overtake me.
If you had a superpower, what would it be?
The ability to slow down time to enjoy the moment would be magical at times.
