Starting work with a client as a consultant on secondment is not the same as starting with a company as an employee, so read on for our top tips to help make your first weeks a success.
Be prompt!
You’re in role to support a busy team, so make sure that you start work promptly, make it to meetings on time and generally pride yourself on your timekeeping. Why does this simple courtesy matter so much? It’s one of the quickest and easiest ways to build trust and make a positive impression. Switch on your tech savvy
As a consultant new into an organisation, you’re expected to be able to work within whatever systems the client is using. Check out these quick guides to using Slack and Teams if you’re not familiar with them. If the client has document management or contract management tech in place that isn’t familiar, ask for training and, while you’re waiting, check on YouTube for any “how-to” guides from the vendor.
Find your quick wins
As a consultant, particularly on a short engagement, you don’t have the same amount of time to settle in that an employee might. Work with your primary contact at the client to clarify expectations, check how they like to be communicated with and identify a couple of jobs you can get done in your first few days so they can see you making progress quickly.
Build your professional network
As a consultant, you might not get introduced to the business in the same way as an employee. If there are introductions you need, ask your primary contact at the client if they can help. Remember, be friendly but at the same time keep your focus on building professional relationships – these won’t necessarily be as close as colleague relationships.
Be prepared not to be invited to everything
When you’re an employee, you’ll often be invited to training, socials and company meetings. As a consultant, there might not be the same opportunities to get involved. Don’t take it personally! Tax and employee regulations mean that clients have to be mindful of your consultant status and different clients have different ways of working.
