Building Your Personal Brand: How Consultants Can Stand Out

Consultant Help Docs

As a legal consultant, your reputation is one of your most valuable assets. In our Obelisk Live webinar, employment law and people ethics consultant Lizzie Donaldson shared practical insights on how consultants can build a personal brand that leaves a lasting impression.

When you move from a law firm or corporate environment into independent consulting you are no longer supported by an institutional brand- you become the brand. How you present yourself directly shapes the clients you attract and the opportunities that come your way.

Why Personal Branding Matters

Lizzie emphasised that clients will choose to work with consultants they trust- and trust is built through personality and authenticity. In a profession filled with highly capable lawyers, those who stand out are the ones who communicate clearly, show up consistently, and make a memorable impression.

Personal branding is not a quick campaign or a single activity- it’s a long-term strategy.  When you combine visibility with authenticity you help clients and colleagues understand who you are and what you do best.

Putting Your Brand Into Practice

Building a brand starts with understanding your strengths, values, and the clients you want to serve. Lizzie shared her own journey in developing her consultancy, Berry, from initial concept to full identity. She showed how thoughtful decisions, about logos and colour palettes, photography and websites, can communicate professionalism and tone, even without a large budget.

Branding and networking should form part of your ongoing business development, not be last-minute activities squeezed in when time allows. Tracking events, contacts, and follow-ups helps ensure your visibility is consistent and effective throughout the year.

Maximising Your Online Presence

LinkedIn is a vital platform for consultants. Lizzie encouraged participants to keep profiles up to date, post regularly, and engage authentically. Sharing insights, commenting thoughtfully, and staying active helps you stay visible and demonstrates your expertise, without slipping into over self- promotion.

Finding Your Niche

A strong personal brand also comes from clarity about your niche. Lizzie explained how combining her employment law expertise with her passion for mentoring helped her to create a distinct and memorable position in the market. Consultants are encouraged to explore the intersections of their skills and interests to develop a unique offering that feels natural and compelling

Communicating Your Brand

To help consultants articulate their value quickly Lizzie shared a simple elevator pitch structure: “I am… I do… My passion… My goal.” Practising this makes networking and client introductions easier, helping you communicate confidently and consistently, whether you’re speaking to potential clients, peers or new contacts

Staying Consistent and Connected

A strong personal brand compounds over time. Lizzie reminded consultants to stay connected with peers, professional networks, and potential clients, avoid common pitfalls like disappearing from LinkedIn or neglecting connections, and nurture relationships. Long-term consistency in communication is what ultimately turns your brand into a long-term professional asset.

Building a personal brand is not about self-promotion. It’s about authenticity, visibility, and consistency. By investing thoughtful time and effort into how you present yourself, you can attract the right opportunities, build lasting client relationships, and stand out in an increasingly competitive legal market. Let your brand reflect not just what you do, but who you are and the value you bring.
